![]() ![]() Of all the UK festivals Stonehenge "Free Festival'' is perhaps the greatest and perhaps the most well known. But, in the festival game, fame is irrelevant. There were, of course, many other bands who did not become well known. Jethro Tull, Arthur Brown, Hawkwind, The Pink Fairies, The Edgar Broughton Band, Pink Floyd and Gong are just a few of the many bands who took some of their first steps away from obscurity on to the Live festival stage. Since those euphoric days of the mid '60s, many festivals have come and gone, and a whole plethora of great UK rock bands have become known to the public via the festival medium. The first major festival, and the one that really started it all, was Windsor Jazz Festival in 1967, an event that managed to stay alive and kicking up until its brutal destruction by "the authorities'' in the early '70s. ![]() The UK Festival scene, if it can be called such, has a long and varied history that has developed in tandem with some of the best of UK underground rock bands. ![]()

We talk about who Brontorina might be, and they all agree it must be the dinosaur on the cover. Then someone points out that the name of someone in the class starts with a B as well. ![]() We talk about the letter it starts with and the sound it makes. We’re building prediction skills and a foundation for connections and comprehension. Wait, is that a boy dinosaur or a girl dinosaur?” I ask what they think the story might be about. “Probably their grandma,” someone suggests. Some point out that there are BOY ballet dancers, and an old lady. They love that the dinosaur’s head is bumping into the letters above. They notice the ballet dancers and the enormous dinosaur on the cover. Here is an example of some of the conversation that took place as I recently shared a wonderful book, Brontorina by James Howe,* (*affiliate) with a group of young children.īefore starting the story, I show the children the cover and ask what they see. While simply hearing the story has its benefits, really building literacy, comprehension, and vocabulary requires conversation off the page.
